what is Diaphragm? definition, opening of the diaphragm.


Diaphragm is a dome shaped muscular and tendinous sheath that extends across the bottom of the rib cage. it pass between the thoracic and abdominal cavities and separates these two regions of the body from one another. The diaphragm is performs an important function in respiration and act as the primary muscle. it has many major and minor openings but there is 3-major opening of the diaphragm.

Major opening of the diaphragm

  1. Venacava opening -it is a central quadrilateral opening, situated in the center of the diaphragm at the label of the T8 and pass through inferior venacava and right phrenic artery.
  2. Esophageal opening – t is a muscular part situated at the label of the T10, the gastric branch of vagus nerve, esophageal branch of the right gastric artery pass through between the thorax and abdomen.
  3. Aortic opening -it is osseoaponeurotic part situated at the label of the T12. Pass through the aorta and thoracic duct.
